The APD SWAT team and negotiators were called in just after 4 p.m., after receiving a report that the suspect was armed with a handgun.

Officer Jeb Hilton said the team attempted to contact the suspect with a bomb robot and an APD canine officer. The suspect was said to be hiding in the crawl space of the home.

“Officers heard what sounded like a muffled gunshot,” Officer Hilton said. “And they removed the APD canine from underneath the residence.”

Next, officers ‘introduced chemical irritant into the crawl space.’

Around 7:39 p.m., Officer Hilton said, the suspect came out pointing a gun at the officers. Officers fired several shots at the suspect and he was hit multiple times. He was given immediate medical attention at the scene and was taken to the hospital where he died.

His name will be withheld until next of kin is notified.

APD Special Crimes Unit is investigating. Per department policy, all officers involved in the shooting will be placed on a three-day administrative leave.
