On July 18, 2017, Mikey the police dog was shot in the line of duty.

Mikey and his team were responding to a SWAT call in Fresno County, California. The pup was accidentally shot in the paw when a bullet went through another dog and into him.

Mikey lost two toes when he was shot, and was bleeding badly. His handler, Deputy Jerry Kitchens, rushed Mikey to the vet, but he didn’t have much hope that his beloved dog would ever serve again.

“Just the severity of it, I [thought] there’s no way he is gonna come back to service, no way,” Jerry said.

Amazingly, Mikey proved Jerry and everyone else wrong.

The dog had surgery to save his leg, and went through rehab and training to get back on his feet (metaphorically and literally).

On November 29, 2017, just four months after his traumatic injury, Mikey was cleared to get back to work!

As you’ll see in the video below, Mikey seems really excited to return to duty. He’s working his way through training with flying colors, without even showing any signs on injury.

Pretty soon, this resilient pup will be back out on the force again, helping keep people safe.
