Hundreds gather for fallen Richardson police Officer David Sherrard’s funeral

Hundreds of mourners filled North Dallas’ Waterpark Community Church to near capacity Tuesday in memory of  Richardson Officer David Sherrard, who was fatally shot Feb. 7 while responding to a disturbance at an apartment complex.

“We’re here honoring a true hero,” Richardson Police Chief Jimmy Spivey said. “He made a true sacrifice, and he made that sacrifice coming to the aid of people he did not know.”

Sherrard, 37, was the first officer killed in the line of duty in the Richardson Police Department’s 63-year history, and the rows and rows of men and women in uniform offered testimony Tuesday to the brotherhood that binds those in law enforcement.

As officers tried to enter Rene Gamez’s apartment last week, they were fired upon and Sherrard was shot. Gamez also died of his wounds. Brandon McCall, 26, has been charged with capital murder of a police officer.
