Machete-wielding man arrested after standoff with police in Bethlehem

Machete-wielding man arrested

BETHLEHEM, Pa. – A SWAT team was called out to Bethlehem early Thursday morning after a man wielding a machete was threatening police.

Aristotle Tarboro is now facing a number of charges including aggravated assault.

It began Wednesday when Fountain Hill Police said they received a call about a dog on Pawnee Street. Police believed the dog belonged to Tarboro.

Officers say when they arrived, they found a vehicle with heavily tinted windows parked outside Tarboro’s mother’s home, with a dog inside of it.

Police say as they tried to get Tarboro out of the vehicle, the dog somehow got loose and attacked another dog inside of a home on Cherokee Street.

Police say they had to use a Taser on the dog several times before they were able to get it in a cage.

Police say Tabroro drove his truck toward Bethlehem after the incident. According to police, they attempted to locate him at that time.

Around 11 p.m. that night,  police say Tarboro called 911 from the 300 block of Mechanic Street in Bethlehem and said there was a “true emergency.”

Officers arrived and saw Tarboro sitting in his truck. Police say Tarboro got out holding a machete and approached the officer in an aggressive manner.

As more officers arrived he began pacing around and ignored their commands to drop the machete. Officers say he pointed the weapon at them and said “I’m going to chop off your heads.”

Police say Tarboro then got back into his truck and led officers on a chase  through parking lots in the 300-100 blocks of Mechanic Street. He eventually stopped in the 400 block of East 4th Street at the intersection with Fillmore Street.

According to police, Tarboro rolled down his window and continued to threaten officers and point the machete at them. At this time police realized that the weapon was duct taped to his hand.

He eventually surrendered and police arrested Tarboro. They found a ball-peen hammer and a metal pipe inside of his vehicle. His license had also been suspended.

He has a preliminary hearing set for April 27.

Tarboro was also involved in a similar incident with police back in 2015.

Sources say Taboro is a veteran who suffers from mental health issues.
