Manhunt underway after shooting suspect fires rifle on Birmingham police

A manhunt is underway after a suspect fired on Birmingham police officers early Sunday.

It all began about 3:30 a.m. when an off-duty officer reported shots fired in the area of the 400 block of Ninth Street West. Sgt. Johnny Williams said West Precinct officers responded to the area and encountered a suspect leaving the area at a high rate of speed.

The officers saw the suspect’s car stop in the 500 block of Ninth Street West and the suspect exited his vehicle with a rifle. The suspect began to fire at officers and one of the officers managed to return gunfire before the suspect managed to flee the scene.

Williams said there was gunfire damage to two patrol cars but no injuries to officers. Police later learned a victim had sustained injuries in the 400 block of Ninth Street West. That victim was taken to the hospital and is in stable condition.

Sometime before 7 a.m., an abandoned vehicle was found on the railroad track near the 1900 block of Avenue B in Ensley. Police said there was blood in the abandoned vehicle.

The SWAT team and tracking dogs are on the scene as the search continues. The State Bureau of Investigation is also on site.
