Out-of-state homicide suspect in custody following standoff in Phoenix

A five-hour standoff ends with officers finding the suspect hiding in the dryer.

Phoenix police say the man was wanted for murder out of another state. He was taken into custody on Monday night. But getting him wasn’t easy.

It started around 2 p.m. at the Motif Apartment Homes on Cactus Road near the Interstate 17.

Neighbors say they were told to stay inside as SWAT teams searched for the wanted man.

“That’s scary, that’s very scary,” said resident Lynn Johnson.

SWAT teams zeroed in on a second-floor apartment. They spent hours trying to coax the man out.

They even tried a gas grenade. When that didn’t work, they blew the door off the apartment and went in with a police dog.

They finally found the suspect hiding in the dryer.

“A dryer? Really? He was a tiny little thing. Gotta do what you gotta do, I guess. But I’m just glad he’s gone,” said resident Wendy Fouts.

Neighbors watched the whole thing unfold.

“When I pulled in, I saw the whole commotion. I didn’t know what to think,” said Nathan DeLeo.

The suspect was wearing nothing but socks and underwear when they treated him at an ambulance for what appears to be only minor injuries. Then the U.S. Marshals loaded him into a squad car to be taken to jail.

“It’s a nice, peaceful, good ending and I’m pleased with that,” said Fouts.

Police have not yet released the suspect’s name.

As for what he allegedly did and where, we’ll learn more about that once he’s booked into jail.
